Dreams can come true. In sports, in the world of soccer, 19-year-old João Félix, a rising superstar in the competitive sport, realized his dream to play with the star player he always admired, Cristiano Ronaldo.
From the time he was only 3 years old, young Félix remembered watching Ronaldo play, when he made his debut on the Portual soccer team. At that time, Ronaldo was the 18-year-old rising star in the world of soccer.
Félix watched the Portuguese player become one of the leading scorers in the history of the game, earning 126 all-time goals in the European Cup, and playing for the Italian club Juventus.
Now, at 19, Félix is a superstar in his own making and his international debut had him playing alongside his mentor. They won the international title together at the inaugural UEFA Nations League, and the whole thing seemed unreal to Félix.
“He looked like a video game figure,” Félix told Benifica TV after his first meeting with Ronaldo. “It was weird, I had never seen him live, so close to me like that. I told me friends later that it looked like I was in career mode in PlayStation.”
He stood in the same locker room as his mentor and hero, and said, “I was just thinking that I was standing there by his side. It was strange, but it was a dream come true to be with him.”
And, Ronaldo is impressed with the protégé. Félix appeared in 21 league games and scored 11 times and assisted seven times.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is an example for everybody,” Félix said. “We always have to look up to him.”
And now, with the next generation, Félix is on his way to the same status, becoming one of the most high-profile prospects.
